How to Check Oil with a Dipstick

You need a clean rag or paper towel, a level parking spot, and about 2 minutes. No tools, no jack, no experience required. If the engine was running, shut it off and wait at least 5 minutes, which lets oil drain from the cylinder head and valve cover back into the oil pan, where the dipstick measures it. Checking immediately after driving gives a falsely low reading because oil is still coating the upper engine.

Step by Step

  1. Park on level ground. A sloped driveway tilts the oil in the pan and skews the reading. If your only option is a slight slope, park with the engine facing uphill, since oil pools toward the dipstick on most front-engine vehicles.

  2. Open the hood and find the dipstick. Look for a metal rod with a bright yellow or orange loop handle, usually on the driver's side of the engine near the front. If you can't find it, check your owner's manual. If your car doesn't have one at all, skip to the "Cars Without a Dipstick" section below.

  3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean. Grab the handle, pull the rod straight out, and wipe the entire blade with your rag. The oil on it right now is splashed there from driving and doesn't represent the actual pan level.

  4. Reinsert the dipstick fully. Push it all the way back into the tube until the handle seats against the opening. Wait 2-3 seconds.

  5. Pull it out again and read the level. This second pull shows the true pan level. Look at where the oil film ends relative to the two marks on the blade. The oil should sit between the low and high marks, ideally in the upper half.

  6. Check the oil color. Rub a drop between your thumb and forefinger. Healthy oil is amber to dark brown and feels smooth. See the color section below for what darker or unusual shades mean.

Two-minute oil check: Park level, wait 5 minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert, pull again. Oil should sit between the two marks and look amber to dark brown. If it's at or below the low mark, add half a quart of the viscosity printed on your oil cap (typically 0W-20 or 5W-30) and recheck. If the oil looks milky or foamy, do not drive, because that indicates coolant contamination.

How to Read Your Oil Dipstick

Every dipstick has two marks that define the safe operating range. The space between them represents roughly 1 quart of oil on most 4-cylinder and V6 engines, and larger engines can span up to 1.5 quarts between marks (check your owner's manual for the exact amount). Your oil level should sit somewhere between these two indicators, ideally in the upper half.

Dipstick markings vary by manufacturer:

  • Two dots or pinholes: The lower dot means "low" and the upper dot means "full." Common on GM, Ford, and Chrysler/Stellantis vehicles.
  • L and H (or MIN and MAX): Low and high. Standard on Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia vehicles.
  • Crosshatched or shaded area: The entire marked zone is the safe range. Oil covering the upper half to three-quarters of this section is ideal. Found on European vehicles and a few domestic trucks.

What Each Level Means

  • Oil at or near the high mark: Full. No action needed.
  • Oil halfway between marks: About half a quart below full. Safe to drive, but consider topping off before a long trip.
  • Oil at or below the low mark: At least 1 quart low. Add half a quart, wait 2 minutes, and recheck. Repeat until the level reaches the upper half.
  • No oil visible on the dipstick: Dangerously low, at least 2 quarts short on most engines. Add 1 quart immediately, recheck, and investigate the cause.

Don't overfill. Too much oil is nearly as harmful as too little. Excess oil contacts the spinning crankshaft, foams, and loses its lubricating ability. It can also blow out seals or damage the catalytic converter. Add half a quart at a time and recheck, since it takes 2-3 minutes for added oil to settle into the pan and register on the dipstick.

What Color Should Oil Be on the Dipstick

Fresh oil is amber or honey colored and translucent, and you can almost see through it on the dipstick. Within a few hundred miles, oil darkens to light brown as it picks up combustion byproducts and microscopic contaminants. This darkening is the oil's detergent additives doing their job. Dark oil does not automatically mean the oil needs changing.

The Finger Test

Pull the dipstick and rub a small amount of oil between your thumb and index finger. Clean oil feels slippery and smooth. If you feel grit (tiny hard particles), the oil has accumulated enough metallic debris and carbon that it's grinding against engine surfaces instead of protecting them. That's a change-it-now signal, regardless of the miles since your last oil change.

Milky Oil Means Coolant Contamination

If your oil looks like a chocolate milkshake (milky tan, foamy, or gray), stop driving immediately. Coolant is leaking into the oil, almost always from a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. Oil contaminated with coolant loses its lubricating properties and will destroy bearings and cylinder walls within miles. Head gasket replacement costs $1,400-$3,200 at most shops (RepairPal, 2026 estimates). Continuing to drive with milky oil can escalate that to $4,000-$8,000+ for a full engine replacement.

One exception: a small amount of milky residue on the underside of the oil filler cap (but not on the dipstick) during winter months can be normal condensation. Short trips where the engine never reaches full operating temperature allow moisture to accumulate in the crankcase. If the dipstick oil itself looks clean, this cap condensation typically burns off during a 20-30 minute highway drive.

Cars Without a Dipstick: How to Check Oil Electronically

BMW eliminated physical dipsticks from most models starting around 2006, replacing them with a capacitance-based oil level sensor in the oil pan. Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and select Cadillac, Lincoln, and Mazda models have done the same. If you've searched under the hood and can't find a dipstick handle, your car almost certainly uses an electronic sensor.

BMW (iDrive)

To check the oil level on any iDrive-equipped BMW:

  1. Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature (temperature gauge at its normal midpoint — about 5-10 minutes of idling)
  2. Park on level ground with the transmission in Park
  3. Navigate to Car → Vehicle Status → Engine Oil Level in the iDrive display
  4. Wait about 30 seconds for the sensor to measure — the level appears as a bar graphic

This procedure is confirmed by BMW USA's support FAQ. The electronic reading requires operating temperature, so if the engine is cold, the display shows "Oil level measurement not possible" or a similar message.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes displays the oil level through the instrument cluster:

  1. Start the engine and idle to operating temperature
  2. Open Vehicle Status in the driver display (exact path varies: COMAND on older models, MBUX on 2019+)
  3. Select Engine Oil Level

Mercedes vehicles flash a warning in the cluster if the level drops below the sensor's minimum threshold, but proactive monthly checks catch gradual consumption before it triggers the warning.

When Electronic Sensors Fail

Electronic oil level sensors are wear items. BMW's oil condition sensor (part number 12617508003 on E90-series 3 Series models) typically lasts 80,000-120,000 miles before failing. A bad sensor may show a persistent warning light, an inaccurate reading, or no reading at all. Replacement costs $150-$300 at an independent shop. If you suspect a faulty sensor, a mechanic can verify the level manually by draining and measuring — but that's a shop procedure, not a 2-minute driveway check.

How Often Should You Check Your Oil

Consumer Reports recommends checking your oil at every other gas fill-up, roughly every 400-600 miles for most commuters. A once-monthly check is the practical minimum. Always check before a road trip longer than 200 miles.

Frequent checks are especially important for engines that consume oil by design. The amounts manufacturers consider "acceptable" are higher than most owners realize:

Manufacturer-accepted oil consumption: BMW considers up to 1 quart per 750 miles normal. Audi's threshold is 1 quart per 600-700 miles. Subaru allows up to 1 quart per 1,000-1,200 miles. The industry norm for most engines is 1 quart per 6,000-12,000 miles. If your vehicle falls in the first group, monthly checks aren't enough — check every 500 miles or at every fill-up. Consumer Reports data on 2010-2014 vehicles found that roughly 2% had excessive oil consumption requiring top-offs between changes.
